ALL.I.EVER.WANTED / Thursday, December 3, 2009

so like, this is my first album review... Been thinking about doing this for a while anyway and since I have Kelly's album, it's a good place to start right?

The first American Idol comes out with her 4th album, All I Ever Wanted. Time to review the album from the Idol Winner that managed to take the world by storm.

Tracks:

01. My Life Would Suck Without You - 5/5
The lead single off the album, this song broke many records (highest jump to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Canadian Hot 100, however, the Canadian Hot 100 record was recently broken by Britney Spears' 3). This song is perfection (to me at least). It's addictive and definitely one of the best tracks of 2009.

02. I Do Not Hook Up - 3.5/5
Okay this was the second single released. Written by Katy Perry, Kelly definitely delivers this song better with a stronger voice and turning it into a pop-rock song. A catchy song that you're bound to replay a few times but kind of a weak second single (especially considering the rest of the album).

03. Cry - 4/5
This is the first ballad of the album. Honestly, it takes a few plays to get used to this but it's absolutely beautiful. Her vocals are amazing as usual. You may find it boring at first since all the addictive pop/rock tracks are in front/behind of it but it's a nice break when you're listening. Overall, a good song. It can be a potential hit given the right promotion.

04. Don't Let Me Stop You - 5/5
My personal favorite track of the album. This is splendid. A great pop/rock song. Listen to it, you'll find yourself hooked on it fast. I definitely hope this is released as a single, it will be a huge radio success. Love it.

05. All I Ever Wanted - 4.5/5
This is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's more rock than the previous songs and shows how wide of a range Kelly has. It'll take a while to get hooked onto this one too (heh, it's the same for most of the songs on the album).

06. Already Gone - 5/5
Okay, I actually felt this was a boring song at first but it is purely vocals. The third single and yes, it draws comparisons to Halo but this song was written and recorded before Halo. Kelly's vocals are superb here and it's a great song. You won't have this on repeat but it's definitely nice to hear once in a while. Great vocals, great song.

07. If I Can't Have You - 3.5/5
Well you can't expect everything to be smooth sailing right? A pretty decent track once again but for a rock-like track, All I Ever Wanted is definitely better. Takes a few listens to get used to but overall, a decent track backed up with killer vocals.

08. Save You - 4/5
Okay, this song starts off slow. It's the third ballad but definitely a good one still. It gets good in the middle. Like with Already Gone, if it's on repeat you get sick of this fast. An occasional listen or two (twice/thrice a day?) and you'll find yourself liking this song a lot more. A nice break from all the rock/pop songs.

09. Whyyawannabringmedown - 4/5
Heh, Avril Lavigne meets Kelly Clarkson! This is more of a punk song and it showcases Kelly's range once again. A nice song that makes you feel good in general.

10. Long Shot - 5/5
This is beautiful. Long Shot is my 2nd/3rd favorite in the album and it's written by Katy Perry too. If they had to release one of the Katy songs, it definitely should've been this one. Way better than I Do Not Hook Up and it'll be great on the radio. Love it.

11. Impossible - 3.5/5
Similar to If I Can't Have You, it's kind of a letdown after all the good tracks. Still, it's definitely good but I have nothing much to say about it.

12. Ready - 3/5
The fourth ballad and definitely the weakest. Her vocals are good though but this is boring compared to the previous three ballads. May take a long while to get used to this song but overall, this is the disappointment and where the album kinda gets bad.

13. I Want You - 2.5/5
Okay, an average song. If I had to choose, this is probably my most hated song on the album. Nothing much to say here.

14. If No One Will Listen - 4/5
A good ballad. Definitely veering to the boring side but this is a beautiful song. Her vocals are superb here, some restrain shown and I think it's a good song.

BONUS TRACKS:

15. Tip of My Tongue - 4.5/5
Great song. Love it. Definitely should've been included on the album over I Want You or Ready.

16. The Day We Fell Apart - 4/5
Okay, I loved this too. Takes a while to get used to it. It's another guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not sure if most people will like it but I do.

17. Can We Go Back - 5/5
A great rock track. Love it. Best Bonus Track for sure.

Review:

One of my favorite albums of 2009. This album showcases Kelly's vocals well and if you're searching for radio hits, this album is a great choice to buy. Pop/Rock/Punk, she's got it all here. Ballads are gorgeous too. It's definitely comparable to Breakaway (her 2nd album, which is one of the best albums released this decade imo).

If you loved her singles, get this, you won't be disappointed. It's nominated for the Grammys under Best Pop Vocal Album and I definitely feel this is the strongest album in that category. I hope she wins but it's most likely going to the Black Eyed Peas (overratedness).

Overall Score: 4.12/5
(total scores of the songs divided by the number of songs)
